Anoushka Shankar
Anoushka Shankar is a master of the sitar, the stringed instrument synonymous with Indian classical music. But the London-born musician has also expanded the parameters of the instrument’s sound, using it to create vibrant and innovative compositions that transcend genre. She’s worked with diverse artists, from Sting and Norah Jones to Herbie Hancock and M.I.A., and her live shows are a mesmerizing blend of tradition and experimentation.
Shankar began studying the sitar at nine, under the tutelage of her father, the legendary Ravi Shankar. She quickly showed a prodigious talent for the instrument and went on to perform with her father in concerts around the world. But she also felt the pull of other musical genres and began incorporating jazz, electronica, and world music elements into her compositions. As a result, her 2005 album “Rise” was a breakthrough, earning critical acclaim for its boundary-pushing sound.
In recent years, Shankar has continued to push the boundaries of what’s possible with the sitar. Her 2019 album, “Reflections,” is a hauntingly beautiful meditation on grief and loss, featuring collaborations with artists like Nitin Sawhney and Alev Lenz.
Anoushka Shankar’s live performances are a testament to her virtuosity and artistry. Whether performing solo or with a band, she imbues each performance with a sense of passion and energy that’s truly infectious -thanks to her ability to seamlessly blend different genres and styles. In addition, her improvisational skills make each show feel like a unique and intimate experience. Shankar has performed in some of the world’s most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House. Her shows are a display of the enduring power of music to bring people together and transcend cultural boundaries.
